The Education System in Canada

Canada is one of the most highly developed countries. So, their education system is one of the best in the world. Education is a top priority to the Canadian government, and it has paid off well. Children start going to school usually at the age of five or six and finish when they are about 16 years old.

According to University of the People: The Education Revolution, the school system starts in pre-elementary or kindergarten. It is offered to children that are of the ages four to five and is mandatory in counties like New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, but optional in the rest of Canada. Kindergarten helps develop basic skills, and overall is used to prepare kids for elementary school.

Primary school is the next stage of education. In Canada, it is required for all children to attend. It starts at first grade and goes through sixth grade when students are at the ages of 11 to 12. Some subjects taught in primary school include reading, math, language arts, history, social studies, science, music, art, and physical education, which is normally taught by one teacher in each classroom.

Secondary school is then split up into two parts- junior high school and high school. Junior high is seventh and eighth grade. It prepares students for high school such as getting them adjusted to switching classes and teachers and preparing them for the significantly harder curriculum offered in high school.

High school lasts until 11th or 12th grade, or from the ages of 16-18, depending on the province. The law states: students have to stay in school until age 16, regardless of what grade they are in. In Ontario and New Brunswick, students have to stay in school until 18 years old, or until they have graduated high school. In Quebec, high school ends in 11th grade, and students will then go onto Cegep, which is a two-year pre-university program intended to make the transition into college and university smoother.

After graduation, students can go to college and university. Many people after will go to college to prepare for university and gain credits to transfer over to university when they’re ready. The university structure in Canada is similar to the United States; they start with a bachelor’s degree, then a master’s degree, then lastly, a Ph.D. (of course it’s their choice to keep going after a bachelor’s degree).

The education system in Canada is outstanding, and I would imagine that I would enjoy going to the country and exploring.
