Do you have a study hall or AcLab at your school? In this article, I will be talking about the importance of having a study hall period.
My school recently gave us a study hall period twice per week for us to work on our homework, get help from teachers, or go to club meetings/activities around school. We can go to any classroom in the school we want to or other places like the library for quiet study. I find it helpful, and I find that I can complete a lot in this time, saving me a lot of work at home.
Students need to have this time to themselves to study and catch up on work because so many of them are busy outside of school with work, activities, sports, clubs, and family matters. Also, even if people are not that busy outside of school, completing their homework in school or finishing most of it would give them more free time at home to do whatever they would like. School time may be one of the only times they can get help and get significant progress done on their homework.
Also, it is good to have a break from school and constantly learn more material to reflect on what you have already learned and reviewed by doing homework or other activities. If you have class after class on school days, with little breaks (as we usually do) it is hard to find time in school to process the information and understand what you have learned. In addition, teachers during this time are relatively easy to contact as it is the middle of a school day, and they are in the middle of teaching-they have some free time to help students at school. Otherwise, students have to ask for help during class (which they might be afraid to do) or go for help some other time, like after school, which not everyone might be able to do.
Another important thing that can be accomplished in AcLab is taking tests or completing work you have been absent for. Then, you can do the work you missed in school without having to worry about it for long or having to do the work the next time you have class (and risk missing out on more material that everyone else is learning). One last thing I would like to note about study hall time is that it allows you to meet for clubs without going before or after school and maybe having some to pick you up. It is at least very helpful for me because sometimes I cannot drive to or from school. It is very convenient to have your club meetings completed within school time and not have to spend extra time out of school to meet and plan.
Overall, study hall time is really important and helpful for students, especially in high school. If every student could have this time, they might feel a lot less stressed and better about school and find a plan to succeed.
